Ottawa Citizens Race Series: GT Race #2

GT Series – Event 2

Even with the lingering storm clouds in the sky and the smell of rain in the air just before race start, the rain held back and the clouds cleared away to give us some amazing weather for the second race in our series.  With fourteen drivers competing, the track was certainly less crowded than our first event, but it was just as action packed, and everyone left with a smile on their face.

In the Calabogie Mustang Class, we saw 14 year old Harry Steenbakkers set the fastest race lap with a lap time of 1:22.952 in the #96 Calabogie Mustang.  Unfortunately, neither Harry, nor any of the other drivers from any classes could match the pace or the absolutely spectacular drive made in the #01 Calabogie Mustang by Richard L’Abbé, who took the class and overall race win completing 29 laps in of the Stadium track in just over 40 minutes and 59 seconds.  The rest of the Calabogie Mustang Podium was filled out by Steve Bruder who took second place in the #08 Mustang for his first race of the season, just 42 seconds behind Richard, and Chris Harrison, who took third place crossing the finish line 1 minute behind the race leader for his second podium finish in the same number of races.

The GT1 Class was a little sparse this race with only one competitor, James Bergeron, who only needed to cross the finish line in order to take first place in the GT1 Class.  Unfortunately, alignment issues leading to premature tire wear, forced James to retire from the race early.  James still remains the overall points leader in the GT1 class.

The GT2 Class had many battles, a few early retirements, and a couple of new comers to the podium.  After a battle that lasted nearly the entire race between Mani Azeri in his #101 Ford Contour, and Steve Bruder in the #08 Calabogie Mustang, Mani managed to work his way through the GT2 field to take first place, and his second podium of the series.  Michael Schmitz, even though he was battling fuel starvation issues and finished the race sputtering with a nearly empty tank, managed to take second place and his first podium of the series after starting from the very back of GT2.  Third place and his first podium of the year was taken by Jim Edmonds (a.k.a. Matt’s Dad) in the #95 Mustang after some exciting battles throughout the race with both Mani Azeri and Terry Edmonds in the #105 Mustang.

Our Gentleman’s GT has also been graced with the addition of a new sponsor to our series.  Tops Car Wash ( located at 979 Richmond Road in Ottawa, is supporting our series and providing each of class winners with cleaning and detailing services.  A big thanks goes to out to Top Car Wash for their support!
